Teamwork in nursing is a crucial factor that significantly influences the quality of patient care. Effective collaboration among nurses ensures timely interventions, reduces medical errors, and improves patient satisfaction (Adeyemi et al., 2024). Nursing teamwork involves clear communication, coordinated patient care, mutual support, and shared responsibility among healthcare providers. Studies have shown that when nurses work together efficiently, patient outcomes improve, and healthcare facilities experience lower mortality rates and reduced complications (Williams & Olatunji, 2023).
Tertiary hospitals in Kwara State, like many in Nigeria, face challenges such as understaffing, high patient loads, and limited resources, which can hinder effective teamwork (Ogunleye & Bello, 2024). Poor communication, lack of cooperation, and hierarchical structures within healthcare teams can lead to fragmented care, mismanagement of patient treatment plans, and an increased risk of medical errors (Ibrahim & Sanni, 2023). Enhancing teamwork among nurses has been identified as a strategy for improving patient outcomes, yet there is limited research on how teamwork specifically affects patient care in tertiary hospitals in Kwara State.
Despite the recognized benefits of teamwork, many hospitals still struggle with inter-professional conflicts, unclear roles, and limited coordination among nursing staff. Examining the impact of teamwork on patient care in Kwara State’s tertiary hospitals will provide insights into strategies for fostering collaboration and improving healthcare delivery.
In many tertiary hospitals in Kwara State, patient care quality is often compromised due to a lack of effective teamwork among nurses. High patient-to-nurse ratios, communication breakdowns, and differences in experience levels contribute to inefficiencies in healthcare delivery (Okafor & Musa, 2023). Research suggests that poor teamwork leads to delays in treatment, increased patient complications, and higher mortality rates (Chukwu & Adeyemo, 2024).
Despite the emphasis on teamwork in nursing education, real-world hospital settings often fail to implement effective team-based approaches due to systemic challenges such as inadequate staffing, workload pressures, and lack of leadership support (Yusuf & Hassan, 2023). Without proper teamwork, patient care can suffer from inconsistencies, leading to poor health outcomes. Therefore, there is a need to assess how teamwork among nurses influences patient care quality in Kwara State’s tertiary hospitals and to identify strategies for improvement.
H₀: Teamwork among nurses does not significantly affect the quality of patient care.

This study focuses on tertiary hospitals in Kwara State, examining how teamwork among nurses influences patient care. Limitations include differences in hospital policies, variations in staff training levels, and potential reluctance of nurses to disclose teamwork challenges. The findings may not be generalizable to primary or secondary healthcare facilities.
